Juliette Turner “OUR CONSTITUTION ROCKS”

Mara MorouneyWritten by WTK Reporter, Mara M, Age 14 WI

I had the opportunity to interview Juliette Turner about Our Constitution Rocks!, the book she wrote about the Constitution. She explained to me that she decided to write a book about the Constitution because she and her mother read the Constitution together three years ago. Juliette thought that it was very interesting and she wanted to make it interesting for kids today. She wanted people to read it. Juliette thinks that the Constitution is important to kids today because it is America’s roadmap. It sets up our government and tells us how it should be run. The Constitution gives us checks and balances that make sure that one branch of government doesn’t become too powerful. The Constitution is important to kids today because the Constitution is vital to the country. Without it, the government wouldn’t have any guidelines. Juliette wanted to show people how important the Constitution is. Many people think that the Constitution is irrelevant. Juliette wanted to combat that statement.I asked Juliette what the most challenging part of writing the book was, but she said that overall, it wasn’t too challenging because she enjoyed it. She had to read and research a lot of information, but _ had a great time doing it. There was also a lot of editing, but that was fun, too.  She learned that the articles of the Constitution are the real body of the document. Juliette said that most kids think that the Bill of Rights is the most important part, but really it’s the articles that set up

Kidshow the government should be run.  Juliette’s mother inspired her writing the most, giving her a love of country, others, and the Constitution. The American patriot from the past that Juliette looks up to the most is George Washington because he was so involved in the Constitution’s creation. The Constitution wouldn’t have existed without George Washington.  He was also a key player in the Revolution and helped a small army beat one of the largest armies in the world.

Juliette loved researching her book. She read many essays by scholars all across America. She said that they were full of knowledge and expanded her vocabulary. Overall, Juliette’s favorite part of writing her book was the promise to her generation. She says that if the world can gain some understanding of the Constitution, it will help preserve it. Her favorite part was the knowledge that she could help her generation gain some deeper understanding of the Constitution and its relevance.

Juliette isn’t sure of her career path but she’s very interested in law and politics so she says that maybe she’ll do something with political science. Juliette also might like to do something with writing.

we the kidsJuliette would like to tell any kid with an interest in history to keep on loving it and to make time to learn about the past. She says that it will help the country survive. After all, the founding fathers studied history to form the government that we have today. Juliette wanted to show people how important the Constitution is. Many people think that the Constitution is irrelevant. Juliette wanted to combat that idea.

Juliette wrote a fantastic book. The book explains the Constitution in a fun, easy way for anyone to understand. Whether in the classroom or on your personal bookshelf, any kid who loves history and wants to learn more about it would love Our Constitution Rocks! by Juliette Turner.

MY QUESTION & ANSWER TIME WITH JULIETTE

Mara interview with Juliette MARA: Why did you choose to write a book about the Constitution?

JULIETTE: Three years ago my mother said to me, “We’re going to read the Constitutionâ€. We did and I thought that it was very interesting. I thought about how my generation doesn’t know much about the Constitution and I wanted to change that. I wanted to keep the Constitution cool and let people know that it’s not just an old document. I wanted to make people want to read it.

MARA: Why do you feel that the Constitution is important to kids today?

JULIETTE: The Constitution is America’s roadmap. It sets up our government and tells us how it should be run.
