Pirating was an important factor in the establishment of the United States of America. The historical aspect and tie to the founding fathers is actually fairly significant. Although mention of piracy with the founders is somewhat troubling for some people, Ben Franklin was actually responsible for issuing letters of Marque and commissioning Privateers (which are just pirates with a letter authorizing them to loot and plunder “enemy” vessels) to attack the British navy.

Jefferson Davis used the same tactic in the Civil War against the North. Hundreds of authoriztions as Privateers were issued and some of the ships were even owned by Northern Businessmen out of Baltimore and Virginia.

My particular crew is not as serious as many reinactors. We do celebrate the freedom…the camaraderie…and the fun.
